At the end of November 2019, MOST announced the establishment of the first two National Agriculture High- and New-Technology Industrial Demonstration Zones, in Nanjing (Jiangsu province) and Jinzhong (Shanxi province). The establishment of the first two demonstration zones follows a series of opinions, regulations and work guidelines issued in the past two years by the State Council and MOST.
Based on already existing agri-tech parks, the new national demonstration zones will play a key role in achieving the national Rural Revitalisation Strategy, by promoting the development, application and integration of green, key agricultural and rural technologies. Specifically:
- Nanjing demonstration zone: will focus on green and smart agriculture, mainly centring on bioagricultural industries. Significant efforts will also be made in creating a competitive base for international agri-tech cooperation, and for regional integration with the Yangtze River Delta region;
- Jinzhong demonstration zone: will focus on organic dry farming, mainly centring on agricultural and non-staple food processing industries. Significant efforts will also be made in creating a strong base for national food safety and functional agriculture.
According to the State Council, by 2025 around 30 National Agriculture High- and New-Technology Industrial Demonstration Zones are expected to be established across the country. These may represent interesting areas for European agri-tech actors to consolidate or expand their activities in China.
